Assessment on Student Level of AchievementFormal assessment is used to support the conclusions made from the test. These types of tests are referred to as standardized measures. These tests have been administered in the past with statistics to support the conclusion such as the student is mathematically below average for his age. With this in mind, special needs students are given the California Alternate Assessment for Mathematics grades 3, 8 and 11. These assessments were designed for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. Informal assessment are not data driven instead the focus is on content and performance. Running records are considered informal assessments because they indicate how well a student solves math problems in a specific domain. Scores such as 10 correct out of 15, percent of correct math problems, and most rubrics are given from this type of assessment. Below are examples of informal assessments that can be used with special needs students or regular education students and even one for the educator to assess her skills in the classroom.
