With my husband David, waiting in line for Star Tours
I'm the kind of person that is willing to give anything a try, even if it sounds a little silly. So when I got to thinking about the world of education and how, like language it's always evolving, I knew that I didn't want to be the kind of teacher who let the world of education evolve around me without being an active participant.
I joined the innovative learning program in an attempt to stretch myself and broaden my horizons. I learned how to be a teacher in a bit of a bubble. My credential program was very traditional (think lots of direct instruction, very little innovation) and then I spent a couple of years subbing while I waited for a position in my content area to open up. Once I found myself a position, things had changed, drastically and while I was very willing to try new things, I didn't really have much of a clue what those new things were. So I was very excited to join the innovative learning program. I'm looking forward to broadening my pedagogical and technological horizons.
My philosophy of education is that everyone deserves a chance to broaden their horizons with the acquisition of knowledge and critical thinking skills. I an excited to be the person who can help build that bridge between a student and understanding. It's really amazing what some students can do when they apply themselves t the task at hand. I feel like it is my job to support students as they are entering a new world. It is my job to give them the tools and skills they will need to navigate the new world they are entering.

Reflections on My Journey
A classmate used the following quotation in his blog, “People will learn when it’s important to them and when they’re ready for it.” This really resonated with me as well. He spoke about reluctant learners and students who'd come up through years of the system having internalized that they are, "Bad at math/English/whatever." This was a direct connection to my DQ focus involving student engagement. My whole purpose is looking at students who are reluctant (and struggling) readers and working on ways to support them. If they don't like to read, then they won't, and if they won't read, then they won't get any better at reading. I'm looking at how can I change things so that those students who don't like to read, will like it.
I'm also trying to keep in mind that for some of them it's a can't issue, and for some it has developed into a won't issue. I think that teachers sometimes lose sight of their student's motivation and it's nice to have the SITE model to remind ourselves. It's also important to remember that even if the won't has developed because of a long history of unsupported can't, it's still a won't problem when it comes to motivation and helping to 'solve the problem.' |
My TPACK Journey
My TPACK journey has been wildly enhanced by the innovative learning program. Overall I was pretty confident in my content knowledge at the beginning of the program. On the other hand, my technology knowledge has been increased. We have been introduced to so many new tech tools that I am really excited about finding ways to really boost my TC classroom skills. This is especially relevant given that as our district transitions schools over to New Tech Network schools there has been an increased focus on the use of technology in the classrooms.
