Baseline Survey

​At the beginning of the school year, students took baseline surveys rating their engagement, interest, excitement, and participation in math at 35% favorability.  Math growth mindset, perseverance, and self-efficacy were rated at 32%, while math curiosity was the lowest at 27%.

Pre-Survey

Self-rating pre-surveys were given to students before Unit 5 to assess their current participation and attitudes, as shown below.  These questions expanded on the baseline survey given at the beginning of the school year.  Compared to the baseline survey, questions 1 and 2 show that a majority of students were still not keen on engagement and participation.  The results in questions 2 and 3 were consistent with the baseline survey, but those in question 1 were lower, with a higher percentage unfavorable.

End-of-Unit 5 Data

Compared to the pre-survey data, question 4 shows that students who never or rarely participated by volunteering to answer questions in math class decreased, while students who often or always raised their hands increased, and question 6 shows similar trends.  Question 5 shows similar trends, except for one category of participation.  The percentage of students who rarely stayed on task remained the same from the beginning to the end of Unit 5.  Question 7 shows that more students thought the personalized math problems throughout the unit had more impact than the research journaling, both, or neither.

End-of-Unit 6 Data

Compared to the pre-survey and the end of Unit 5 survey, question 8 shows a reduction of students who never or rarely volunteered to answer questions in math class, and an improvement of students who often or always participated, and questions 9 and 10 show similar trends.  Question 11 shows that a little more students believed personalized math problems had a greater impact on their participation and attitudes than the research journaling or both, but more than neither.
