Traditionally, math has focused on conceptual understanding and procedural fluency rather than relevance and applications. This action research study introduced real-world math problems personalized to students and had them research math applications in their interests, hobbies, and daily lives, and journal about them. The study included two cycles during Units 5 (Functions and Volume) and 6 (Associations in Data) of the eighth-grade math curriculum, using surveys, personalized problems, and math application research journals. The goals were to enhance students' connection to math, improving classroom participation and attitudes.
