About the Author: Teresa Alcantar
I was born, raised and now teach in the Napa Valley. I take great pride in working for the same community I grew up in! As an elementary student I was classified as an English learner and bilingual. I have a passion for language and literacy because I saw the first hand value of being bilingual. Once in the workforce, I applied my passion and skills to teach at a dual immersion school. Witnessing the doors that being bilingual opened for me, I became inspired to share this gift with my students. With an unwavering commitment to education, I strive to create a classroom environment where students feel empowered to express themselves confidently in two languages.
My teaching philosophy:
In my teaching philosophy, inclusivity and social justice lies at the core of my approach. I firmly believe that every student deserves an equitable and nurturing learning environment where they can thrive and reach their full potential. To achieve this, I actively strive to create a classroom that celebrates diversity in all its forms – be it cultural, social, or cognitive. I acknowledge and value the unique strengths and challenges that each student brings, and I adapt my teaching strategies to accommodate their individual learning styles. I encourage open dialogue and foster a sense of belonging, where every voice is heard and respected. By incorporating diverse perspectives and experiences into the curriculum, I aim to broaden students' horizons and cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation for the world around them. Ultimately, my teaching philosophy revolves around empowering students to embrace their differences, collaborate harmoniously, and grow together as a compassionate and inclusive community.

Reflection
My one-year master's program has been a profoundly rewarding journey. The intensity of the curriculum pushed me beyond my limits, but it was in those moments of struggle that I truly grew as an educator. The wealth of knowledge and insights I gained throughout the program has transformed my approach to teaching, refining my skill set and enriching my pedagogical practices. I can confidently say that I am now a better teacher, equipped with innovative techniques to engage and inspire my students. The supportive community of peers and professors played a pivotal role in my growth, providing valuable feedback and encouragement every step of the way. As I look back on this transformative experience, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the invaluable lessons learned.
