Strategies for limiting teacher talk and facilitating more student talk!
  • Provide multiple opportunities and contexts for practice
  • Include routines and learning contexts that encourage talk
  • Establish norms and guidelines
  •  Increase wait time
  • Provide time for reflection
  •  Encourage active listening
  • Ask and teach students to ask the kinds of questions that foster dialogue
  •  Organize the classroom to facilitate and encourage participation
  • Model and practice using Talk Moves
  • Encourage deeper more thought-provoking discussions
  • Own your talking and get to the point
  • Set a timer
  • Have students answer in a group vs. 1 student at a time
  • Avoid the echo and  stop repeating everything students say
  • Keep your questions open
  • Stop the unnecessary repetitions
  • Stop interrupting
  • Encourage student talk.
By emphasizing the importance of students speaking up, asking questions, discussing and dissecting, we can create communities where all students are heard, where all voices are part of the learning.
