                    The lessons throughout this study

          Student discourse is an incredibly powerful tool that never ceases to amaze me with its effectiveness in the classroom. The magic lies in its versatility, as it has the potential to fulfill a wide array of standards across various subjects, from math to science and language arts while addressing 21st century skills.  Through purposeful and thoughtful planning, teachers can craft thought-provoking questions that ignite curiosity and actively engage our students in meaningful discussions. As educators, we have the opportunity to create a vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment that motivates students to actively participate in classroom discussions. When students become active contributors to their learning journey, their understanding deepens, and they develop a genuine passion for the subjects at hand. Student discourse is a treasure trove of learning possibilities, and harnessing its potential empowers our students to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers in an ever-changing world
          In my study, I had a specific focus on increasing student discourse in both language arts and math. To facilitate this, I introduced vocabulary terms along with non-linguistic representations, creating a holistic learning experience. Before the student talk time, I carefully crafted thought-out questions to guide their discussions. In language arts, we honed in on addressing the Common Core Standards RL2.1 and RI2.1, which revolve around asking and answering text-dependent questions. By incorporating discourse, students were able to simultaneously work on reading standards while honing their speaking and listening skills. In math, we tackled multiple priority standards, such as 2.NBT.1 and 2.NBT.2, which centered on counting within 1,000 and understanding the place value of three-digit numbers.
