Reflections on the Project
Much of the work I am currently engaged in professionally is facilitating learning experiences for teachers. My own journey as a learner has inspired me to push the boundaries of what can be accomplished with teachers in the context of Professional Learning. Considering the idea of how to best support more innovative practice in our profession through the diffusion of innovation lead to the birth of The Transformative Teacher Leadership project. Beginning with 18 teachers in the Summer of 2013, the messages are beginning to spread. Interest is already coming in for a second cohort in 2014 with the help of our 'first followers.'
Lasting Learnings from the Program
Reflecting on my own challenges and excitement as I have worked through this program has really allowed me to experience adult learning at its best. One of the most powerful ideas I am taking away is that teachers need dynamic, ongoing professional support and development as they learn how to integrate innovative teaching practices and technology to meet the needs of our 21st Century students. It is not enough to train teachers how to use technology; they must also understand how to use that technology for effecting teaching and learning. This was just the sort of learning environment at Touro. I learned how to use technology as a tool for teaching not through classes on google, but because I was immersed in experiential learning using technology from day 1. I am taking that learning with me into every facilitation or professional development that I engage in. My project set out to create highly effective PLCs, my own PLC at Touro--Cohort 3--provided so much support, helped me deepen my own learning and strive to do better. The strength of that PLC added to my conviction about the power of teachers learning together.
