Standards & Competencies
How does an educator consolidate all the standards and frameworks into lessons that are engaging and focused on the priorities of what students need to know?
There are so many frameworks to guide educators that it can be overwhelming. There's Common Core, ELD, 21st Century, Art, Engineering, Social Emotional, Next Generation Science, etc. This is by no means a comprehensive list of all the available standards used to design lessons for students. I visualize these various frameworks like they're parts of a puzzle. You are making progress, putting pieces in and things are connecting with ease. Then you realize pieces are missing and you have to go find them. Even upon finding that missing piece, sometimes it has to be adjusted in order to to fit back into the puzzle. In this way, educators are constantly working with standards but adapting them to fit student needs. What I have experienced is the more you use the frameworks, the easier it gets. I am fortunate that I have remained in the K-2 realm for my entire teaching career. So I've gotten to the point that I know and have memorized most of the core content standards. I've taken it a step further to see how my grade level standards align with the grade levels above and below my current grade levels so that I would have deeper understanding of how the puzzle pieces fit together. "Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress in every society, in every family."
