Engineering and Art StandardsIn 2017, my school became a magnet school. As a magnet school, we offer special instruction and programs that other local schools do not. Magnet schools are created in an effort to attract a more diverse student population from across a district.
Our magnet theme is leadership along with art, technology and engineering. A team looked at various standards created by other states and organizations such as International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), Next Generation Science Standards's engineering guidelines as well as the National Art Standards. The team also examined magnet school standards from schools in our local area. Since our primary focus was on the leadership standards, we chose to make the art and engineering standards very broad in order to cover multiple areas. The Art Standards were based off the Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards for Art and Design Education. The Engineer Standards were based off of Napa Junction's STEM standards.
Professional DevelopmentAs part of our Magnet, each year, teachers received over 100 hours of professional development. Fifty hours were devoted to systemic training specific to content areas or curriculum. The other half was focused on leadership, engineering and art. I am so grateful for the opportunities for deeper training.

My favorite professional development was traveling to Boston, MA to visit the Museum of Science which is home to a STEAM curriculum titled "Engineering is Elementary". We received hands on training using the curriculum we would have access to. Another favorite was when an art professor came to our campus to provide a one day training. We learned about drawing doodle patterns, using pastels and acrylic paints. We were provided supplies that we could take and use in our classroom the very next day. |
