California Common Core State Standards Mathematics Electronic Edition (2010, modified 2013) states, “Mathematically proficient students start by explaining to themselves the meaning of a problem and looking for entry points to its solution. In the state of California, less than 13 percent of graduating third graders can think logically and express their thoughts in order to solve a math word problem (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP, 2017).
