Where to start?
Before beginning any type of instruction, you want to acquire a baseline of the student(s) skill set.
CORE Phonics Survey- summative assessment
First, make a copy of the survey to use for taking notes. If you do not have prior knowledge of the student's reading ability, begin with Part A. Alternatively, you can start at the Part corresponding to the student's grade level as referenced below. Instructions for administering each part of the survey are available on the Record Form, accessible by clicking here.
Prompt the student to state the sound of each letter, and mark any letters where the sound is stated incorrectly. I recommend circling errors and noting the sound stated above the letter. Afterward, proceed to the one-syllable words, taking short breaks after completing 3-4 Parts if needed.
Refer to the Mastery Table below to identify specific phonics skills requiring explicit teaching.

Following the CORE summative assessment, it is recommended to deliver explicit, systematic, and targeted instruction using the multisensory activities outlined on the How-Tos page. For ongoing progress monitoring throughout instructional periods, consider implementing the following:
After a few months, reassess the student's understanding of letters and words that initially showed errors in the CORE Phonics Survey to gauge growth.
- The Three-Part Drill
- Assessing performance in Syllable Division activities
- Conducting daily or weekly Dictation exercises
- Having students read decodable passages or books.
