My action research project's focus on phonics, comprehension, and varied instructional time frames supports the following standards by enhancing foundational reading skills, improving comprehension, and promoting engagement through diverse learning modalities.
These standards guide second-grade students in developing essential skills across reading, speaking, listening, and language arts. They focus on mastering phonics and word analysis to decode various types of words, including those with long vowels, common vowel teams, prefixes, and suffixes. Students learn to recognize irregularly spelled words and read fluently with accuracy, expression, and comprehension. In literature, they engage deeply by asking and answering questions about key details and describing character responses to events. In informational texts, they determine meanings of words in context. Additionally, they participate in collaborative discussions, follow discussion rules respectfully, build on others' ideas, seek clarification, and demonstrate command of English conventions in writing, including spelling and punctuation. These standards collectively support comprehensive language development and effective communication skills in diverse educational contexts.
