Learning Intentions and Success Criteria was initially just a concept I experimented with in my teaching practice. I hadn't delved deeply into the research behind formal implementation. However, I sensed their potential as powerful tools for all educators.
Enrolling in the Innovative Learning Master's of Education program through Touro provided me with the opportunity to explore and apply these strategies in a more structured and measurable manner. What I discovered affirmed my beliefs! In the 2023-24 school year, our district embarked on an initiative to integrate students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) into general Science and Social Studies classrooms. These students would have traditionally been placed in Special Day Classes (SDCs). This decision aimed to provide a "least restrictive environment" for all learners. As educators, we faced a significant shift in our teaching methods, necessitating deeper scaffolding and additional time to set up students for success, despite receiving limited guidance and resources. I chose to focus my research on these students, along with my Multilingual Language Learners. My initial inquiry centered around how the implementation of Learning Intentions and Success Criteria would impact the achievement of students with diverse learning needs. My findings confirmed that the clarity practice of co-constructing Learning Intentions and Success Criteria with students was remarkably effective. For my students with diverse learning needs, it required more time and practice, but they were able to achieve success as well.
