Standards for the Teaching Profession
My research focused primarily on teacher growth and improving practice to support student agency. The California Department of Education recognized the California Standards for the Teaching Profession published by Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Linked here is the latest version published in 2009.
The standards include 6 competency areas:
"Excellent teaching requires knowledge, skills, artistry, passion, and commitment. Effective teachers integrate the following: (1) ethical concern for children and society; (2) extensive subject matter competence; (3) thoughtfully selected pedagogical practices; and (4) a depth of knowledge about their students, including knowledge of child and adolescent development and learning; an understanding of their individual strengths, interests, and needs; and knowledge about their families and communities." “The remarkable feature of the evidence is that the greatest effects
on student learning occur when teachers become learners of their
own teaching and when students become their own teachers.”
