What is the big deal with feedback and why is it so important?Feedback and iteration, are elements that I feel are super important when it comes to working in the industry - regardless of the focus. Be it the entertainment industry or even in the corporate world both of which I have had the privilege of being a part of - receiving feedback and the implementation there of is a huge part of the project based work that is done. If teachers can learn to make feedback a part of the culture in the classroom, and an integral part of project themselves - rather than big reveals at the end, students will be better prepared for the work ahead.
Let me elaborate a little. Traditionally when a project is assigned, worked on and turned in feedback is mostly given at the very end with little incentive to implement and improve the work. If feedback is given at various points in the project and throughout - there is greater chance of student work being the best it can be at the end. This is a huge opportunity also for students to hear from people in the career field. Inviting community members and industry partners gives real world perspective on the work the students are doing in class. My capstone centers around the idea that through research, the best kind of feedback is timely and relevant. Taking this idea a step further, means utilizing a digital means to capture this feedback with a tool like Adobe Spark. The ultimate goal being the improvement of student work with feedback being both visual, audible and digital so that it can be accessed at any time. Why did I choose Feedback as my capstone?I chose feedback for my capstone because I noticed that my students were grasping the basics of the tools I was showing them ( photoshop, video editing, photography) and some of the concepts ( elements of art, principles of design) but the quality of the work was just not nearing where it needed to be. I began to question myself as their instructor. "Am I making the expectations clear for the assignment?" where the types of questions I would ask myself. It dawned on me that there needs to be more feedback in my classroom. The type of skills and work being done in my class, is not simply the type of work you just finish and turn in - with design work, there is refinement and iteration. So I decided to explore how feedback is given, and whether digital tools can have an impact, and if there is a way to better capture the feedback.
