Somewhere in around year ten of my career I was hyper-aware of these monstrosities making their way from cars into classrooms-- and vice-versa after school. The Quik Cart Pro. Everything a teacher could want. A collapsible basket and telescoping handle. Loads of pockets and storage. Easily hauls your essays to the car and back. Everything a teacher could need to support putting in that extra, unpaid work!
All for $45 hard-earned dollars— paid for by the teacher (that arguably is underpaid). How can anyone look at this situation and NOT see that it has BURNOUT written all over it? And when we look at the sheer quantities of teachers leaving the profession— how can we not address it? And then I realized that all of the weekends spend commenting on papers were culminating in one minute of students looking at the paper’s score and putting the essay in the bottom of their backpack, crumpled with old napkins from In ‘N Out and never to be read again. It was clear to me that something was wrong. Nobody was winning here. Certainly not students. The teachers weren’t. Families of teachers were not. Inefficient and antiquated practices were being glorified to no one’s benefit. Sometimes, the first oxygen mask needs to go to the first responder— the person that shows up to help others. It is my hope that teachers will give themselves permission to evolve for the betterment of their students. After all, a teacher that burns out does nothing positive for their classrooms. |
