Changes in teaching lead to changes in learning...but how does a teacher learn how to change? I began by learning how to flip my classroom instruction when possible. The video on the left is a screencast I created to allow my students to review important instruction around their poetry project without spending in-class time on it. They can rewatch to gain more understanding, and valuable class time can then be spent doing the work. Below is another flipped lesson around gamification of punctuation. |
Checking for Understanding - Give Students a Voice!
Another way I began to change my instruction was to use interactive feedback tools with students to determine if they had mastered concepts. This real-time digital tool engages students in the learning and holds them accountable for demonstrating their learning to the class. It also gave me the chance to identify any problem areas and to address them immediately.
Below is a Padlet I created as a whole-class activity wherein students applied a SOAPSTone reading strategy to identify the speaker, occasion, audience, purpose, subject, and tone of the Pat Mora poem "Same Song."

Student Choice Leads to Greater Engagement and Opportunity to Practice 21st Century Skills
Below is a digital mind map illustrating the SOAPSTone reading strategy for the poem "The Flying Cat," which my student created using Coggle. For this task, my students were allowed to choose their own poems, leading to higher interest and engagement, which leads to deeper understanding.
