Capstone overview:In today's world, where information technology is becoming much more abundant in society, I wanted to see if using it more in my classroom could make a difference to my students in terms of learning a foreign language. Initially I started using Quizlet to help students learn new vocabulary, which really peaked their interest, so then I investigated other apps and began to use those too. My students loved Quizizz when reviewing for quizzes and also Kahoot and using Google forms for testing were popular too. As I learned more about tech tools, I passed this along to my students, so that by the end of their course they were also using Adobe Spark to make presentations.
Listening to music is popular with students too, and so I decided to try to incorporate this more into my classroom to enhance language acquisition and engagement. I had noticed that when I played French or Spanish music in my classroom that students listened carefully and were really focused in on the song and the lyrics. For my capstone project students were given the opportunity to choose any song within reason in the target language, and were asked to develop an Adobe Spark presentation showing 15 new key words from the song, together with a karaoke video. Students were really motivated to work on these assignments, and since they were working together in groups, it enabled me as an educator to spend more one on one with my students as opposed to addressing the class as a whole. This was really valuable and enabled me to help students individually to ensure that they were learning what they needed to learn in the best possible way. |
