21st Century Learning and Workforce Readiness

John Stock's quote below from the NEA Educator's Guide to the "Four C's" (linked image) best describes the importance of teachers implementing the 21st Century skills into their curriculum and instruction:
“Using the ‘Four C’s’ to engage students is imperative. As educators prepare students for this new global society, teaching the core content subjects–math, social studies, arts–must be enhanced by incorporating critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. We need new tools to support classroom teachers and education support professionals in their profession, even as they implement new strategies in their classrooms.”

Building strong teacher-student relationships (TSRs) is not directly listed in the P21 Framework for 21st Century Learning (illustration linked) as a 21st Century learner outcome or as one of the essential four C’s, but my research has revealed that to create a 21st-century classroom where creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking are fostered, it begins with successfully developing and nurturing positive TSRs. Students feeling comfortable to express themselves fully, ask questions, and expand their thinking only comes when TSRs have been firmly established, and the learning environments support the development of 21st Century Skills.
