California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTPs)

In addition to the four teacher competencies, the CSTPs were designed around six disciplines that embody effective teaching. They include the following six standards:
  1. Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning
  2. Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning
  3. Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning
  4. Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students
  5. Assessing Students for Learning
  6. Developing as a Professional Educator 

​Teacher-Student Relationship (TSR) building falls primarily in the first and second CSTP Standards on Engaging and Supporting Students in Learning and Creating and Maintaining an Effective Learning Environment for Student Learning. Teachers can understand students’ prior knowledge, learning needs, interests, or how they learn best by establishing rapport and trust with their students. Furthermore, successfully developing strong TSRs will lead to a positive, safe learning environment where teachers can cultivate student self-efficacy and optimize learning for all students.
