Writing has always been difficult for myself when it comes to teaching. I never saw as much progress with students as I would like. They would typically only make the progress a student makes by simply being in school. However for a student to be at grade level they need to learn many skills and many genres. Because of this, I decided to focus on narrative writing. In my experience I didn't feel as if narrative writing was ever a large focus compared to information writing. When talking with other educators narrative writing didn't seem as important as informational writing either because students are more likely to need to know how to write an informational text for college than a narrative. Well that did not sit well with me because thinking about CAASPP at the end of the school year, I knew they would need to know how to write all genres of writing. The CAASPP randomly assigns their writing prompt and the students need to right accordingly and appropriately. With all of this in mind, I focused on the common core state standards written above for third grade narrative writing.
