Thoughtful Integration of Technology Promotes Academic Engagement and English ProficencyStudies have shown growth in academic engagement and English proficiency when technology is thoughtfully and authentically integrated into the curriculum.
To attain oral proficiency in English it can take students three to five years and four to seven years for academic proficiency. In the United States there is currently an achievement gap between English language learners and non-English language learners. During the 2014-2015 school year, seven states, including California and the District of Columbia, each had a population of ELL students that represented 10% or more of the collective number of English language learners in the United States (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2017). Many hand held technological devices are an everyday part of many students’ lives. Students communicate with and learn from these devices. To help students remain engaged in their education, meaningful and integrated 21st Century technology is necessary. In an effort to meet the digital needs of my ELD (English Language Development) students I developed a study to determine the effects of using Google slides as a retelling tool. This site is dedicated to sharing my results and resources in the hopes of inspiring viewers to thoughtfully integrate technology into their English language instruction. |
