My ResearchStudies have shown growth in academic engagement and proficiency for English language learners (ELLs) when technology is thoughtfully integrated into the curriculum. The goal of this study was to determine the effectiveness of integrating Google slides as a retelling tool into an elementary English Language Development (ELD) class. This study was carried out in a fifth grade ELD class consisting of 5 girls and 3 boys. Over the course of three thirty minute sessions students were asked to summarize two different chapters. Students used the traditional method of paper and pencil to summarize the first chapter and for the second chapter used Google technology to create a slide that described the main idea of the chapter. This was followed by a typed summation of the chapter. Although little effect on the participants’ English writing proficiency was indicated, positive observations were made with respect to academic engagement. Future research is recommended with a larger sample size and larger window of time for conducting the study.
