Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge - TPACK

Picture
With the big push for technology integration, teachers often times feel the pressure to include digital tools on their lessons.   However, often times the result of those lessons does not necessarily translate into learning of the subject of study. The "sexiness" of some of those digital tools is tempting, but we need to remember that they are only tools and should not be used if they don't support and enhance teaching and learning.

Learning about the TPACK framework was one of the most valuable things I got from Touro.   TPACK helped me understand with much more clarity the role of technology in my classroom.  Before I learned about TPACK I would pick a "cool tech tool" and add it to my lesson plan even if it was not completely relevant or helpful.   I was modifying the content to fit the "cool tool" rather finding the right tool and integrate it seamlessly into my plan.

Today I don't use technology for the sake of using it.   I use TPACK to guide my teaching and I know that
great lessons will only be possible if I'm able to infuse them with great pedagogy, content and technology knowledge.

According to the TPACK framework, Technology Knowledge is the "knowledge about certain ways of thinking about, and working with technology, tools and resources. ... This includes understanding information technology broadly enough to apply it productively at work and in everyday life, being able to recognize when information technology can assist or impede the achievement of a goal ... " (Koehler & Mishra, 2009).
