Writing is Vital in Preparing Students for College and Career

Despite claims that emojis and gifs will someday replace the alphabet, it is highly unlikely.

Structured writing is essential for communication in business and higher education. As our global economy expands, it is extremely important that workers communicate clearly and effectively in writing.

Preparing Your Students for The Workforce after Graduation

As their writing teacher, there are several ways you can prepare your students for life after they leave your classroom.

Encourage Collaboration and Communication
Writing activities are the perfect mode to encourage collaboration and communication among students.  Teach them how to be a "critical friend."  Teach them how to share ideas and knowledge with each other.  Teach them to proofread and edit each other's writing.  Teach them how to provide valuable feedback.

Foster Creativity and Critical Thinking Through Writing
Let them explore technology.  Students have a natural "What's over there?" curiosity.  I've found that students are very good at discovering hidden features in the writing platforms we use.  They are also very good at troubleshooting glitches.

Foster creativity by giving them them freedom to think outside of the box.  Encourage their original ideas.  Creative Writing is is a wonderful way to get kids to think about other ways to see the world they live in.

Promote Citizenship and Character
Working together respectful and responsibly on writing assignments promotes good citizenship and character development.

Also, think about promoting Digital Citizenship.  Websites like Google's Be internet Awesome gives you the tools you need to make digital citizenship education an engaging and informative experience for your students.
