Design Process

Picture
The primary audience consists of educators, parents, and education professionals working with English language learners (ELL) in diverse classroom settings. I recognized the challenges faced by ELL students in expressing themselves and actively participating in class discussions, which sparked my quest to find effective solutions.During this phase, we administered pre-surveys to students and families, seeking insights into their attitudes towards participation, challenges faced, and motivations to engage more actively in the learning process. While also conducting research specifically in the themes of student participation and parent engagement.

The workshops integrated evidence-based practices, transliteracy principles, and the Oracy toolkit from the San Diego County Office of Education. The workshops provided families with practical strategies and tools to support their child's participation at home and in the classroom.

The design process was underpinned by empathy, understanding that each student is unique and that the challenges they face may vary. We acknowledged the cultural and linguistic diversity within our audience, and our workshops were thoughtfully designed to be inclusive and empowering.

The participating families needed practical strategies to increase ELL students' confidence and participation. By engaging families and incorporating transliteracy principles, I addressed the need for a supportive and collaborative learning environment that nurtures students' voices and empowers them to express themselves with confidence.

The belief is that the key to transformative education lies in recognizing and addressing the unique needs of our students and their families. As I continue to develop and refine the approach, I  remain committed to creating a more inclusive and empowering educational landscape for all learners.

Designing the Logo

Designing the logo was an exciting and creative process aimed at visually representing the core essence of our goal- connecting families and schools through meaningful conversations. The primary goal was to craft an image that would evoke a sense of unity, collaboration, and partnership between families and the school community. I wanted it  to symbolize the idea of coming together, bridging the gap between home and school, and fostering an environment where open dialogues thrive.
  1. Conceptualization: The initial step involved brainstorming and conceptualizing ideas that embodied the central theme of family-school connections. I envisioned a design that seamlessly integrated the structures of a school building and a home, symbolizing the coming together of these two critical spheres in a student's life. The image of a school building and a house merging into one represented the harmonious collaboration between families and schools.
  2. Symbolism: To create a visually compelling image that reflected the shared goals and values of families and schools. The school building represented education, growth, and learning, while the home symbolized support, nurturing, and familial bonds.
  3. Colors: Choosing the right colors was crucial in communicating the desired message. I wanted the welcoming hues to evoke feelings of inclusivity and belonging. Soft, inviting tones were used to highlight the harmonious relationship between families and schools.
  4. Typography: I aimed for a clean and modern font that conveyed professionalism and approachability. The font style evoked a sense of clarity and straightforwardness.
  5. Final Composition: The final logo design seamlessly merged the school building and home structures, creating a unified and cohesive image with the speaking bubble between them.
