Cultivating more Active Lifestyles for our Students!Even before COVID-19 turned the world on its head and made it generally more challenging for everyone to be physically active, activity levels among students across the nation were on the decline. As many students age through school, they become less active and value exercise and physical education less than they once did. in fact, there has been this need to improve physical activity levels of high school-aged students for a while now. According to a 2003 report from the CDC, roughly one-third of high school students do not achieve a sufficient amount of vigorous or moderate aerobic exercise. As a PE teacher, I feel responsible for changing this! On a broader level, with the start of a new, unprecedented school year of hybrid learning, I simply needed ideas for how to support learners develop lifelong habits and stay motivated while learning PE both online and in-person.
Common sense will tell you that as people gain more and more access to technological tools such as smartphones, laptops and gaming consoles, their physical activity will decrease. I wanted to discover if I could harness appropriate tech tools in the right way to have the opposite effect. With the implementation of fitness tracking tools, such as the running application "Nike Run Club," student physical activity levels might increase and performance might improve. High school students are not only capable of operating the running apps effectively, but also should be able to set appropriate, personal goals for themselves. While setting personal goals, students can keep track of their data and improvement, and therefore might be more motivated to run outside of class. Students might put forth more of an effort within in-person PE class as well, with the aid of a running app to keep track of and log their run data, especially in combination with setting personal goals.
