Overview of my StudyFor my study, I wanted to explore if the use of running applications within smartphones, such as Nike Run Club, would ultimately increase the amount of running students outside of PE class. Would the use of a running application improve their run performance, such as distance and pace? Especially during these strange COVID times with sheltering in place and an unfamiliar model of hybrid learning, the goal was to increase student motivation to be physically active!
My students were directed to complete weekly running logs in which they were expected to go on at least two runs outside of PE class per week. Within their run logs, students set goals and recorded dates and time spent running. They were provided the option to use a running application or not. If using a running app, students could also record distance ran and be more specific in goal setting. When we returned to in-person learning, the running app users were encouraged to use them for in-class runs as well. The idea was to see if those students who used running applications ultimately ran more days per week, demonstrated greater improvement, and were more effective in setting and reaching goals. This research implemented Standards 2 and 3 from Physical Education Model Content for California Public Schools - High School Course 2. Standard 2: Students achieve a level of physical fitness for health and performance while demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles and strategies. Standard 3: Students demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity. Academic Tools to ExploreNike Run Club - NRC is a smartphone application which can motivate users to get out and run more by encouraging them to reach personal goals. The main feature of NRC is and run data tracking, such as distance traveled and pace per mile. Other features include guided running workouts, custom coaching plans, and a fun rewards system.
Nike Training Club - Nike Training Club provides the support and tools necessary to become a better athlete or get in better shape, via home workouts and professionally designed training plans. Edpuzzle - Edpuzzle is a teaching tool in which teaching with pre-existing videos on the internet can be enhanced by adding questions or notations to them. Edpuzzle will also track student progress and let the teacher see students' answers and/or how much of the video has been watched. Quizizz - Teachers can construct student paced assessments, or find pre-existing ones within the Quizizz database. Quizizz utilizes a fun and competitive scoring system for students!
