What inspired this project?
Inspiration for this Project
Prior to enrollment in the Innovative Learning graduate program at Touro University, I felt I needed to learn how to effectively weave technology into pedagogy and content so that I could prepare students for the digital world. As the TPACK model displays, without the infusion of technology students are not prepared to succeed in today's world.
We live in a nation where less than 40% of 4th and 8th graders are proficient at reading (NAEP, 2015). More alarming, is that only 23% of students in our country are proficient at writing (NAEP, 2011). I live in California, where students are performing below national averages in reading, writing, math, and science (CAASPP, 2016). Touro's graduate program taught me how to inspire students to read and write by embedding technology into teaching methods based off of common standards. It also taught me how to empower students to learn new tech tools and apply them to create purposeful projects. During the ProjectDuring the year long graduate program, my colleagues and I created and commented on each other's blogs as a way to communicate, collaborate, and offer constructive feedback. The Power of Digital EducationAfter graduating from the Innovative Learning program, I now have an arsenal of tech tools to immediately apply to my teaching. I transformed from being a timid, tech, word doc user to an innovative, 21st century, digital storyteller. Digital storytelling has the power to motivate students to read, write and technologically transcend their literacy skills through the creation of meaningful digital stories. Digital storytelling also has the power to transform a 20th century teacher into a 21st century educational leader.
