PBL supports students with Common Core State Standards
As Common Core State Standards have replaced previous standards, and a new testing format is introduced, states, districts, and schools, have begun adopting curriculum and teaching styles, such as Project-Based Learning, that allow for more in-depth and meaningful learning to occur. According to its website, the Common Core State Standards provide “a set of clear expectations to ensure that all students have the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life upon graduation from high school, regardless of where they live” (Common Core State Standards Initiative, n.d.). In addition to uniform content standards for all students across the US, Common Core reduces the number of standards addressed at each grade level, thus allowing for a more in-depth and meaningful understanding of the standard.
Project-Based Learning, with its emphasis on teaching content through student-led inquiry and projects, supports students in Common Core. When teachers design PBL units, they include targeted Common Core standards that they intend the students to master by the end of the project. Although PBL offers a new way for students to learn content, teachers must still ensure that the state-adopted standards are addressed.
