Can AI in lesson planning reduce teacher burnout and enhance student engagement?

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content by learning from existing data. It can generate text, images, music, and more and is used in many fields to create innovative and relevant content.

Teachers can use Generative AI in several ways to enhance their teaching and improve student learning experiences:​ This project was focused on utilizing generative AI for lesson planning, content creation and personalized learning in the form of UDL framework lessons.  
  • Lesson Planning: Generative AI can help teachers create detailed lesson plans quickly by generating ideas, activities, and materials tailored to specific topics and learning objectives.
  • Personalized Learning: AI can create customized content for different students based on their learning styles, interests, and abilities, ensuring that each student receives the support they need.
  • Content Creation: Teachers can use AI to generate quizzes, assignments, and other educational materials, saving time and ensuring a variety of resources.
  • Feedback and Assessment: AI can assist in grading and providing personalized feedback on assignments, helping students understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Language Support: For language learners, generative AI can create practice exercises, translations, and conversation simulations to aid language acquisition.
  • Interactive Learning: AI can develop interactive simulations and virtual environments for subjects like science and history, making learning more engaging.
  • Professional Development: Teachers can use AI to access personalized professional development resources, helping them stay updated with the latest educational trends and techniques.

​Enhancing Teachers' Pedagogy with the use of Generative AI


My research project explored the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, particularly within the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. These findings address some of the challenges faced by educators today, including teacher burnout and the need for effective student engagement strategies in middle school classrooms.

Teacher burnout is a growing concern, often exacerbated by demanding lesson planning and the need to meet diverse student needs. With national teacher turnover rates high, there is an urgent need to find sustainable ways to support teachers and enhance student learning experiences.

Integrating AI into education offers a potential solution to alleviate these pressures. AI tools can streamline lesson planning, provide personalized learning experiences, and support the inclusive education principles outlined by the UDL framework. By automating routine tasks and offering insights into student learning patterns, AI helps teachers focus more on instruction and less on administrative burdens.

  • Teacher Training: I conducted structured professional development sessions to equip teachers with the skills needed to use AI tools for lesson planning and instructional design.
  • AI-Enhanced Lesson Planning: I utilized generative AI platforms like MagicSchool and Eduaide to create UDL-aligned lesson plans that cater to diverse learning needs.
  • Mixed Methods Approach: My study employs both quantitative and qualitative methods to assess the impact of AI on teacher attitudes, lesson planning efficiency, and student engagement.
  • Inclusive Education: By focusing on the UDL framework, I ensure that AI tools support diverse learning styles, making education accessible and engaging for all students.
  • Empirical Evidence: My research provides data-driven insights into how AI integration can reduce teacher burnout, streamline educational practices, and enhance student engagement.

My findings have shown that teachers who received training in AI tools reported improved attitudes towards AI integration, more efficient lesson planning processes, and increased student engagement. These results highlight the potential of AI to influence educational practices, making them more adaptable and personalized.
