Importance of Standards
Standards were designed so that all students regardless of where they live, would have access to the same content. The CCSS were adopted in 2010, but not fully implemented until 2014-2015. These new standards are to ensure that by the time studens graduate from high school, they will be college, career and life ready. They are very rigorus standards that not only teach content, but critical thinking skills as well.
As teachers, we always need to keep in mind that the work that we do on a daily basis, should ensure that we are preparing our students to be college and career ready. Planning our instruction should always be around these standards. It is the vehicle that should drive our instruction. Click on the links below for more infomation on standards.
In order for students to be college ready, they need to be able to read proficiently. They should then be given the opportunity to not only have access to books, but also given the time to read. Most jobs require some reading proficience, so that should be the goal of all educators, to have students reading proficiently by the time they graduate from high school.
