This upcoming school year will be my 3rd at the school and my 6th year as a teacher. While I am the least experienced in my department I hope to bring my experiences and knowledge this past year to the table and be that support or guiding force for my colleagues. Art history is one of my passions and last year I was able to recruit enough students to start an AP Art History class this year. This is the first time it will be offered at my school and only one other school in our district offers it. Over the summer I attended my AP training and stayed at Stanford University for 4 amazing and exhausting days. Already I have created a website for the class.
Then recently I have become active with the Arts Council and some how became the representative for my department in partnering with the Arts Council and designing future projects. Providing authentic learning experiences and adult relationships outside the class is important for students. In addition, my principal is looking to add some public artworks to our school and I am heading the project along with my two colleagues. Again I cannot pass up on the authentic opportunity or providing art that ALL students can appreciate.
Continuing My Research
After completing my research, implementing DBAE along with technology and reviewing my results from the 2016 Spring semester I am excited to begin the 2016-17 school year. Changing lessons in the middle of the school year is a challenge in itself and I want to scaffold some of these practices. By starting in the fall I have the time to do the scaffolding I think I was missing in the spring. Just like any lesson I always reflect on how well pasts lessons were and what alterations I can make to improve upon it. For example I learned that just because students are growing up surrounded by technology does not mean they know how to use it or have access to it.
My plan for the next school year is to infuse all 4 disciplines in my lessons or so they are more holistic and comprehensive. But my main focus will be centered on technology because at the end of my research I noticed how much I relied on technology to implement the DBAE changes. Some questions I have are about finding technologies that could enhance my teaching and student learning, increase the level of student engagement, what technologies best support DBAE practices, and how much time do I need to spend on technology? As a BYOD (bring your own device) district I know just how important answering these questions are. In addition, my school decided to include a digital portfolio as a graduation requirement for students in the next few years and I want to be able to give my students the tools they will need to be successful in my class, at school and after they graduate.
