Common Core State Standards

Common Core standards are the backbone of instruction. When designing units, our team brainstorms issues and ideas that are relevant to our students and then connects CCSS to them. 

Since we serve 12 - 21 year olds with varying foundational fluency, we pull standards from many different grade levels within out PBL and Skills classes. As a California teacher for 7 years, it is refreshing to see an across state alignment within CCSS. 

In each of our PBL units, we focus in on 1 - 2 high school standards as well as several supporting standards from earlier grade levels. 

For example, in our Food Justice unit, Right Triangles and Circles were our high school standards while unit rate and percentages were the supporting standards. 

In each of the units, the Mathematical Practices are brought into our design.
