My Inspiration to Enhance Second Language Learning Experience
In Search for More in a World Language ClassroomWhat led me to this project was the desire to improve the language learning experience fro my students. I always wanted the best for them. I wanted them to learn and appreciate the language they were learning. I wanted a fun and safe learning environment where students can take risks, make errors, and not be embarrassed so can continue to develop their communicative competency. I also wanted to integrate technology to facilitate teaching and learning, and combine my passion for teaching Spanish as a world language and my students' interest in technology. I didn't know where to start, where to look, or where to find support. Fortunately, I found the Innovative Learning program at Touro University, where my desire for more in a world language classroom had now become a reality.
Learner-centered with teacher as facilitator/collaboratorWhen I began my journey, I was researching about the "Flipped Model" because I wanted to use technology to support all my students in order to differentiate at their individual pace learning content, save time in the classroom for more content application in the target language, and have more student-teacher interaction. I also wanted the language learner to take charge of their learning. Therefore, I felt that this model was an appropriate strategy to implement to improve the language learning experience.
Introduction to the ProblemThe traditional methods of teaching world languages focuses on the student learning about the language, grammar based teaching, but, if we really want to prepare students for the 21st century, we need need to target on the student learning how to use the language. In other words, student language competence. As a world language teacher, you want your students to have an engaging and meaningful learning experience and have the skills to communicate using the target language beyond the classroom. With new world language frameworks that reflect 21st century learning, implementation of technology, and second language acquisition methodology, world language teachers can have support to transform their classrooms that prepare students for college and career readiness.
