What to do? As an Academic Specialist I was placed at two different middle schools. I split my time evenly between the two sites. One of my first jobs was to review the raw data from the state's test, CAASPP, for each teacher. As I dove head first deep into the data pool I quickly discovered that the achievement gap for English Language Learners was even greater at the middle school level than what I had originally thought. With my past experience as a math teacher I knew this was a challenge that I personally experienced in the classroom. I began to think, how could I in my new position as an academic coach support teachers to teach their English Language Learners Math? I worked with the school's administrative team to develop a plan. I worked with the math teachers to implement best practices into their daily teaching that supports English Language Learners. We also looked at how we can use student data to develop more focus lessons and reviews for students. The math team looked at how the math, ELD, and IB standards all worked together, and where small adjustments could be made to increase the academic language exposure and practice in math class. Next, I worked with the schools ELD (English Language Development) teachers and AVID Excel teachers to have them support students with their math vocabulary in class. A plan was developed too support these teachers so they are best able to support the English Language Learners with the math vocabulary and language that is used in math problems. I worked with both the Math and ELD/AVID Excel teachers to implement this plan and provide communication between the two different teacher groups. The math teachers shared the digital resources they used in class to enhance their vocabulary lessons.
