Defining A 21st Century Classroom Cowboy
In 2007 my school district introduced a program called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination.) I was intrigued by the students they were targeting as these students wanted to be future first generation college graduates. This is why I went into the teaching profession in the first place. I enjoy helping kids get through road blocks on their educational journey to meet their goals and find success in life.
Statement of the Problem
I started noticing a trend my first year incorporating AVID strategies. The AVID strategies were adequate, but lacked year long engagement as an elective class for middle school students ages 12-14. Students were losing a “fun” elective class in order to take AVID. I needed engaging technology applications that could enhance these AVID strategies. The high school AVID coordinator also wanted middle school AVID students to continue taking this class for four more years. How could we enhance AVID strategies to increase engagement, retain students in the program from middle school through high school and help them to become college and career ready?
Educational Context
The percentage of AVID students continuing in the program all the way through high school is low. I think this percentage could be increased with the merging of AVID strategies and technology applications. Currently there is not a defined use of technology within the AVID program. After doing research, I read many blogs and articles from teachers who feel the same way about the lack of technology within the AVID program. My ultimate goal is to merge AVID strategies with technology to enhance learning and engage the learner. There are many computer applications that would work nicely with specific AVID strategies and this is what inspires me to move forward with this project.
