Common Core is sweeping the nation! The technology industry is prepared to take on the challenge! There are now apps, games, and learning software that is aligned to Common Core and has its fundamental skills at heart! I-Ready, one of the leading comprehensive computer based learning programs, has Common Core in mind. i-Ready matches key standards, and overarching skills to help students be successful as 21st century learners. Comprehensive game based learning, as well as other game based learning systems, are working to become aligned with CCSS. Many games are adding a collaboration piece, where students can work with others to find a common solution. i-Ready does not have this component, but it would help if students were able to collaborate on certain topics or in certain situations. Another key component of game based learning is the students ability to problem solve and analyze situations based on elements within the game. This is similar to students justifying answers in a text, or in math. Role playing games can help students think critically, and increase the depth of knowledge. An example of an early game based model is the "Oregon Trail." Current games are more interactive, and authentic. Game based learning, can help our students tackle the Common Core.
