Standards of Teaching
One of the major focuses in education right now is a push for all students to be college and career ready when they graduate from high school. In California this means there is a major focus on the A to G requirements. A to G requirements are the minimum classes required for admittance to state funded schools. The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress is the major way that student learning is tracked in California. The CAASPP replaced the STAR testing of old.
One of the ways that schools address these A to G expectations as well as prepare students for the CAASPP testing is to focus on their use of standards. Teachers are expected to plan their lessons and projects around standards. Districts and schools produce pacing guides that are standards based. Student success in all subject areas is predicated on a base of strong literacy skills. One of the major areas of the new Common Core Standards is a focus on reading across the curriculum. Thus students who are stronger readers are set up to be the better achieving in all subject areas. Everything I do with my students to increase their reading skills, boots their literacy and helps them to be more successful in all their content areas. On the pages to the right are a collection of the standards that I used in my daily practice and throughout this master's program. |
