Design Process
It became apparent that the district was focusing more on 21st Century skills and wanted teachers to adopt technology in their classrooms, but how? Simply being given the tools is not enough, teachers needed the how-to and the why, before they could ever approach the technology wave. In order to meet the growing needs of teachers and learners, NVUSD adopted the New Tech Network style of learning.
New Tech embraces technology not only as a resource but as a source of inquiry, understanding, and even teaching. The idea is that students want to learn because the content is engaging, meaningful and applicable. Students are not just being prepared for what is on a standardized test, but rather for working in real-world situations. It is more apparent that teachers are there for students as mentors, facilitators and guidance, rather than the sole source of knowledge in the room. PrBL lends itself to a seamless integration of 21st Century skills: collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving. These are skills that all students need to be successful, and these are skills any learner can master. Students are encouraged to create their own learning goals by using SMART Goals. SMART goals are a great way for students to set their own personal or group timelines for projects. |
