What inspired my topic choice? What originally drove me to begin thinking about researching technology was the idea of lack of resources in the classroom. Sometimes resources are not always there for science experiments and other science activities and technology can bridge that gap. I am passionate about using technology to get more kids engaged in science and make up for lack of resources. For the past few years in our district we did not have a curriculum. We have been using the old science textbooks which are not aligned with our new standards. Not only is technology important but it is essential for students to be able to access the content we are teaching. Without textbooks, technology has been the key to getting the content across to our students. 
Background and Need for Research
Students need to learn 21st century skills through navigating technology in order to prepare them for the future. Problem solving and being able to navigate technology appropriately are important 21st century skills to teach students.Teachers need to provide learning opportunities for students to demonstrate their 21st century skills, like problem solving and critical thinking, through the use of technology. In California many districts are focused on teaching students 21st century skills to prepare their students for when they graduate. Students must learn these 21st century skills to navigate new technologies in order to prepare for the future. To do this teachers must allow time for students to play around and explore new websites and applications. Then through that exploration, students will learn skills which will help them in the future. Part of being an effective teacher is the ability to meet the needs of all students, which can be difficult. Having a diverse population of students can make this task seem impossible. There are also many factors involved in a student’s life that influence their ability to learn and succeed. Factors such as learning disabilities, language barriers, parent education, a student’s health, the list goes on. Looking at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, if a students basic needs, such as food or shelter, are not met then it’s hard to meet their other needs. An educator’s responsibility is to work past all of those factors and be able to give their students a safe learning environment where they feel valued and want to learn. How can teachers meet the needs of every single student? From the student with an IEP to the student who speaks no English, to the smartest student in the room, and the student who doesn’t believe in themselves, how can teachers meet all their needs at the same time? Teachers can help students by creating a 21st century classroom that allows for collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. Flipped Classroom Model Design- Role of teacher
