Corresponding to the CCSSs, Technology SS, 21st Cs & TPACK
To better prepare students for college, career, and life we must use rigorous standards to drive our (teachers) instruction. Working backwards using the standards when planning our lessons is the easiest way to reach our destination. For my action research I chose to improve independent reading time. I would use that time to work with small groups and also one on one testing with students, unfortunately SSR was not engaging my students and I was not getting quality small group/ testing time. I looked at my map (standards) and plotted a more engaging journey. The Master's in Innovative Learning quickly helped me realize the best route must include TSS, 21st century skills and TPACK. Using an online platform to engage my students during independent reading time has enhanced the quality of my small groups and most importantly my students engagement in academics.
The CCSSs addressed in the action research project are listed below. These standards are 4th grade standards that address literacy skills in the areas of reading and writing.
Reading Literature/Informational:
Key Ideas and Details:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.1
Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.2
Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.3
Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions).
Phonics and Word Recognition:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.3
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.3.A
Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.
Fluency:
