21st Century Learning and Workforce Readiness
The school where this study takes place is currently in year two of a three-year transition to a New Tech Network school. One emphasis of an NTN school, in addition to Project Based Learning and School Culture, that fuels their success, is the “smart use of technology that supports the innovative approach to instruction and culture.” (www.newtechnetwork.org) It is clear there is a need to incorporate several modalities of technology use in a high school math classroom to increase engagement, and in turn, improve achievement. I have implemented several types of technology use in my classroom, that have helped to engage students. With an emphasis on the schoolwide learning outcome of collaboration, students have been working in groups with assigned roles and have had the opportunity to access the math curriculum (www.mathematicsvisionproject.org), explore online graphing websites (www.desmos.com/calculator), check grades, agendas, and assignments with the school’s online management system (www.echo.newtechnetwork.org), play and compete in interactive review applications (i.e.; www.kahoot.it), get class information and updates (www.remind.com), and answer online, interactive questions. (www.polleverywhere.com) Once students are trained on how to use these applications and websites appropriately, they have seamlessly become a necessary and engaging part of the curriculum, and have helped students stay engaged and learn the material.
