Standards and Competencies
Why do the standards matter?
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are the essential structure that provides direction to students as they begin to develop agency. Many online resources, such as Khan Academy, can have an overwhelming amount of subjects and content. The standards help to provide focus to guide students on their journeys. Read more here How does this project help? One of the goals of this site is to help guide students along the CCSS in a way that is both more efficient and more meaningful. Different students have different needs. Different students have different sets of pre-existing knowledge. Student A may need to work with intercepts of linear equations. Meanwhile, Student B needs solidify their understanding of properties of numbers before they can approach solving linear equations. In a traditional classroom, this will result in Student A being disengaged and bored or Student B being left confused and behind. If students are given agency and equipped with diverse digital resources, they can spend their precious instructional minutes focusing on what they need as an individual! What about 21st Century Skills? The ideas driving this project would not have been practical or even feasible a few decades ago. Imagine trying to develop individualized lesson plans for 36 students who may have needs that stretch across different grade levels! No teacher has enough hours in the day to that without the use of technology. This is absolutely a technology driven effort. This means that students need to be digitally literate, be safe digital citizens, and be able to leverage collaboration and communication skills with their peers. The goal is to build a strong team to support each student. Each student will have a teacher, a library of digital resources to take charge of their learning, their peers around them, and most importantly, themselves! Read more here What about TPACK? The heart of this project is to help enable TPACK in other professionals! Some of the most difficult pieces of being a 21st Century teacher is sifting through technology resources to find valuable or useful ones. Even more difficult is finding the time in a busy schedule to develop original digital resources. This project will do some of the lifting for you by identifying and providing implementation tips for powerful digital resources. Read more here What about lifelong learners? This project would be an awful lot of work for an educator to implement if it was only going to impact 180 days of a student's education. This project aims to help create lifelong learners in mathematics classrooms by empowering students with agency and technology resources. One of the driving forces of that is the 8 Mathematical Practices. These are eight "habits of mind" that transcend grade level standards and that equip students to be successful beyond individual classrooms. Read more here |
