How Will I Share? My research paper, my focus of this capstone project centers around trying to merge Common Core standards in ELA, most of which are skills based, with the PBL/Inquiry-based pedagogy our school is in the process of embracing. At least as far as the structure of the Nexttech model. I’ve taught other subjects, social studies, world history, skills for adolescents (Quest--it was like AVID for emotions), and video production, myself, and I can see how the PBL format could be successful in those areas. I can easily see how it can be successful in history, art, music and science classes. None of these classes cover what is on the CAASPP test.
I certainly understand the value of PBL pedagogy in all classes, including LA, but I’ve yet to see an “exemplary” seventh grade PBL project, which covers standards in a timely fashion, and that prepares students for the CASSPP. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, I’m just saying I have not seen evidence of their existence. If I get a Masters--no not if, WHEN I get a master's from Touro, I will undoubtedly parade the document around the faculty room, admonishing people to "read it and weep" pointing out that all they got for their graduate work was a teaching credential and a career. As far as how I may share this information, just as I had done for the research paper, I think I would start out with something that had a high probability of success. So probably showing my teaching partner some of the tools with which I had practiced as part of the innovative education coursework. From there, perhaps in a content meeting, then reaching out to my colleagues whose subjects are disciplines other than language arts. If I'm successful there now, then tomorrow, perhaps a one-man show on Broadway. Many thanks to these fabulous organizations:
