Technology, Pedagogy, and Content KnowledgeTechnology is now present in every classroom setting. It is used to deliver instruction, to access curriculum and the educational technology tools available are exponentially growing. It is no longer sufficient that a teacher be competent in her subject matter and instructional practices. A successful, 21st-century aligned teacher must also have a strong foundation in educational technology.
Under the TPACK framework, a successful teacher is able to blend knowledge of technology, content, and pedagogy to deliver high quality instruction. This model is essential when developing and implementing authentic assessment. Whether it be as the main tool for completing the task, as a means of accessing content, or as a collaboration tool, it is safe to say that almost all authentic assessments utilize technology in some way. Because authentic assessment calls for real world tasks, and our 21st-century world is rooted in technology, it is safe to say that in order to implement effective authentic assessment in the classroom, technology must be used in a variety of ways. In some cases technology might be the actual vessel for the assessment, such as editing a video, or building a website. In other cases it may be a tool to complete the assessment such as using it for research, or to collaborate with other students on a document! |
