Research into Student EngagementStudent engagement is imperative to academic achievement. Engaged students are attentive and participate in class discussions, exert effort in class activities, and display interest and motivation to learn. Students who are not engaged tend to be more passive learners, complain of being bored, and can become disruptive in the classroom. The engaged students have higher grade scores than their non engaged counterparts. This action research study assessed the effects of a blended learning approach on math engagement. “Student engagement and academic achievement often are viewed as individual student attributes or traits but not as outcomes of how teachers structure their teaching (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006).” Through a Blended Learning Approach, using Chromebooks for an online learning component, this study explored whether the new approach would change the way students engaged in math. Background and Need, Rationale, etc.
Flipping the classroom, a blended learning approach, has transformed teaching practices. Teachers no longer stand in front of students and talk at them for long periods of time. This radical change has allowed teachers to take on a different role with their students. There are various instructional guides and instructional videos that can be used to facilitate teachers’ transition into the world of the Flipped Classroom.
Challenges arise with the generation of non- techies. When people are presented with new information that they might feel uncomfortable with, they automatically resist the idea. I would like to give other teachers an opportunity to find their technology comfort level by providing them with a website for reference. Click on the links below.
