 How can I, as an eighth grade teacher, solve the problem of disengagement of Hispanic boys , and find a way to attain successful and meaningful learning by all members of our student community? ​

My Driving Question has remained the same throughout this entire process, but I do think that the model, Challenge-Based Learning (CBL), has caused all students, not only Hispanic males, to become more engaged in their learning.

I can't thank NapaLearns enough for their support of my Masters.  I know that I would like to continue my advocacy of Challenge Based Learning and would be very interested in being a presenter or a coach for teachers who would like to incorporate this important and relevant program into their curriculum.

Research

The inspiration for my topic was a conversation I was having with Pamela Redmond from Touro one day in March of 2015. She was listening to me talk about my issues with student engagement among my 8th graders. I had told her how much I love projects in my  United States History classroom.  She suggested that I look into the model, created by Apple, of Challenge-Based Learning.        She let me know that it was Project-Based  Learning (PBL) taken to the next step.
 I used this idea as my goal for the entire Masters Program.  When school started, our 8th grade English teacher, Jennifer Marinace, was excited that NapaReads was featuring Francisco Jimenez as the author.  An idea was born!   A Challenge-Based project with Immigration as the main idea.  We worked feverishly to create an amazing project from the beginning to the fantastic ending two months later.  We used Apple's Challenge-Based  Learning Teacher Guide, tweeked it to fit the English Common Core standards and voila...magic happened!
