How can we Support our ELLs and Struggling Readers to Access Complex Text?

In a time where many students are struggling to meet the rigorous expectations of the CASS (California State Standards) and what it means to be Career and College ready in the 21st century, we as teachers need to locate the best resources and strategies to support ALL students.  This site will provide you with information to support focused language instruction while leveraging the feedback of various comprehension tools.

Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

As teachers how can we support students in building these fundamental skills?  They are interconnected and are all needed to build student's ability to access the increasingly complex text they need to navigate their education.

"The ELA/literacy standards highlight the growing complexity of the texts students must read to be ready for the demands of college, career, and life." (Turner, 2014)

In the school district in which I am teaching our data shows that our English Language Learners (ELLs) are not making Annual Measurement Achievement Objectives (AMAO) 1 on the California English Language Development Test (CELDT), which shows an annual increase in the number or percentage of ELLs making progress in learning English. These same students scored below basic on the Scholastic Reading Inventory. This highlights the urgent need to support ELLs with their language acquisition, alongside basic literacy skills which builds to comprehending what they read.

What types of feedback and focused language supports can we utilize to help ALL students access complex text?  My driving question, and content of this website, is concentrated on better understanding how focused language instruction can support students in reading comprehension, in addition to feedback tools that might help with students in accessing and understanding complex text.
